S’pore’s exit nullified Malaysia Agreement

The Malaysia Agreement, signed in 1963, has lost its legitimacy among its entities.

By Joseph Wilfred Lakai

The Malaysia Agreement 1963 is a binding treaty that was signed by several representatives from the five parties, namely United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, the Federation of Malaya, North Borneo (Sabah), Sarawak and Singapore.

The main objective of this agreement relates to the formation of Malaysia.

SABAH opposition strongman, Datuk Dr Jeffrey @ Gapari Kitingan has urged that Sabah and Sarawak seriously consider creating new states within themselves.
He cites the vastness of the territory, empowerment either within (or outside) Malaysia, greater efficiencies through decentralisation and maximisation of potential, as reasons for doing so.

His idea is that Sabah be carved up into five states along the borders of the existing residencies viz. Tawau, Sandakan and Kudat along the eastern and northern seaboard, and West Coast and Pedalaman elsewhere, and to be known as the Sabah states.
The 11 existing divisions in neighbouring Sarawak should re-emerge as new states i.e. Kuching, Samarahan, Sri Aman, Betong, Sarikei, Sibu, Mukah, Kapit, Bintulu, Miri and Limbang.
"The total of 16 states and one federal territory in Malaysian Borneo will eclipse the 11 states and two federal territories in peninsular Malaysia," pointed out Jeffrey in his keynote address at a closed-door forum, 'Formation of Malaysia, a Promise Revisited and the Way Forward' on Saturday in Kota Kinabalu.

What are the impact to us without the 18/20 point agreement

Written by Dr. John Brian Anthony
This is a superficial writing but enough to trigger your thinking about why are we in this situation today. Malaya was not honest with us and the most important thing we have current leaders who are willing to sell out Sarawak to UMNO Malay agenda. We are suffering today because our own kind is going against our interest and they got financial reward for doing so. What do you call this kind of people? There are sitting in leadership position and they make the rule to suit themselves – not the well being of Sarawak.
18/20 points is to safe guard Sabah Sarawak from being “taken advantage” of by Malaya/Singapore.
I am writing this article for the benefits of those who need to understand the mind of our founding fathers and how there would like to see Sarawak grow within Malaysia. The 18/20 points agreement is to ensure that the more advance Malaya and Singapore will not take advantage of Sabah Sarawak politically, socio-economic development, natural wealth and heritage and in a way to avoid the “symptom” of colonization by Malaya. After 47 years of the formation of Malaysia, we are in the position to make our judgment on whether Malaya has indeed taken advantage of Sabah and Sarawak.
By most account as written in this blog, many of us felt “marginalized” and are NOT treated as equal by UMNO/Malaya in more ways that we care to write in this blog. There is no need for me to go and list the instances as it is now common knowledge.
